Sound on/off

We breed all our own organic turkeys from our own breeding stock. They are a beautiful silky black colour, slow growing with an excellent carcass and fine flavour.

Not many people realise, but 99.99% of turkeys bred in the UK, including the organic ones, are produced through artificial insemination. The reason for this is that modern male turkeys (stags) have such large breasts and such short legs that they can't mate naturally. Commercial Black and Bronze turkeys fall sadly into this catagory.

A.I. in turkeys is a grisley process which involves the hen turkeys being caught up every week in the laying season so they can be fertilised by a human hand in a latex glove.

Our turkeys mate and lay naturally. Thankfully there are still a few old fashioned bloodlines of Norfolk Blacks and we are crossing these with a more modern 'double breasted' strain.

We are well on our way to finding a happy medium between natural mating ability and a nice large round breast that people associate with modern turkeys.

We would never have got started without the help and advice of some wonderful people who have carried on breeding traditional Norfolk Black turkeys down the decades and I am grateful to them.
